CIOSA and CSIM celebrate Seva Mela 2010


CIOSA (Confederation of Indian Organizations For Service and Advocacy) in association with CSIM (Centre for Social Initiative and Management) organized its annual special event titled “Seva Mela” for the people in and around Chennai on 26th and 27th of September, 2010 at Valluvar Kottam.

Highlights of Day One, September 26th


Seva mela was inaugurated by Padmasree Dr. Bakthavathsalam of KG Hospitals, Mr Murali, Sri Krishna Sweets, and Mr Gnani, writer.  This Mela serves as a platform to bring together social workers, corporate employees, volunteers, and college students under one roof and encourages giving amongst common people. Giving Corner and food festival was also inaugurated.

CIOSA Seva Awards were by the guests companies, NGOs and individuals. The. Best grass root worker award was received Smt. Sundarai Selvam of Vishranthi for her contribution to Vishranthi over 25 years, Life time achievement award was given to Ms Ranjani Murugan of Family Planning Association, Best activist award was given to Mr. Chidambaranathan, Tamil Nadu Handicapped Federation for his contribution to the rights of disabled, Concerned Corporate to CTS, Air Marshall Krishnaswamy Award to Mr. Rajagopalan of  Sukriti Charitable Trust, for starting a Trust after retirement and contributing to the welfare of children

At the Food Festival, Coke, Adyar Bakery, Ginger breads, Duthcess Club,  put up 20 food stalls and raised money for their favorite NGOs and the proceedings from that will be given to NGOs.

At the exhibition by NGOs, more than 65 NGOs participated in the exhibition. Visitors played chess with visually impaired, checked their sight, played darts, spun the charkha and enjoyed a number of other warm experiences.

At the Seva Fest, children and women from participating NGOs gave a 4-hour cultural performance on 26th afternoon. More than 200 children performed.

Highlights of Day Two, September 27th

Vasthrasamman and DOS: SHG, BIG Fm radio listeners donated one ton worth of Dhall, Oil sugar and one truck load of old cloths. DHALL oil sugar were donated to orphanages and the old cloths to GOONJ.

Seva Talents: 12 colleges participated in the street theater completion, peace painting and debate.

120 students took part in the essay competition conducted for school students.


Actor Vijayakumar, Dr Joe Arun of Loyola Outreach and Justice Vallinayagam gave the prizes to the winners and donated food material to NGOs and felicitated the function.


CIOSA (Confederation of Indian Organisations For Service and Advocacy) is a collaborative platform for NGOs, corporate, and Individuals for mutual learning, resource sharing and collective espousal of social causes. The network has more than 250 NGOs, 14 corporate, 300 individuals. Seva Mela is conceived by CIOSA in the 2007 and conducted every year to promote voluntary organsations work. In the earlier seva melas witnessed participation from schools, colleges corporate, and general public. More than 3000 people visited seva mela.

Centre for Social Initiative and Management (CSIM) is a management Institute for Social Entreprenuers. CSIM runs one year dilploma, certificate courses and e-learning courses for social workers and entrepreneurs. The students of CSIM have started many successful NGOs.
